I found myself enjoying this module, I like to come to the tutorials hear other he opinions of others on the paper that was to be read that week. A skill I am developing is critical analysis. I feel I am becoming better at analysing papers and deciding whether I agree with the opinion of the author or not, and then developing my own opinion from that analysis. I can also tell my reading skills have improved and I can possibly understand the papers better now.
My understanding of an annotated bibliography is that it is a list of citations followed by a short summary, an evaluation and opinion of the reader. This could be used to give other readers an insight to the quality of the paper and how interesting/accurate it is.
The topic our class focused on was Urban Interaction Design. I voted for this topic out of a list of 3 and was delighted that it would be our main focus this semester. Urban Interaction Design is focused on designing features that enhance the interaction for urban dwellers. We focused on the impact created and how it affected the lives and opinions of people who live in urban environments.
Studying digital graffiti as a location-based social network (http://dl.acm.org/citation.cfm?doid=2556288.2557266) drew my attention as I enjoyed what the paper was about. It shows that graffiti is up for interpretation and can be used in a positive way to create interaction between users without damaging the environment. They participants were giving instructions on how to use the app but were not told what to use it for. I think the author should have recruited a larger variety of participants, not just using students as the majority as this would have been interesting to see how children or an older man or woman would have responded.
Suspicious Boxes and Friendly Aliens: Exploring the Physical Design of Urban Sensing Technology?(http://eudl.eu/doi/10.4108/icst.urb-iot.2014.257307).This paper interested me because it dealt with a very relevant problem in todays society which is privacy. The groups were very strategic in their methods and created real life scenarios. This gave realistic responses and an insight into how people are willing to give away information if there was fun and interaction involved. I would have liked if the author researched more into why people are unhappy about their information being taken and what they think it would be used for.
